Gloucester Gladiators

The Worcester Royals played host to their local rivals the Gloucester Gladiators on the 7th of November. This was to be Worcester's first game of the season, following a cancellation the week before. Worcester were confident having beaten Gloucester in the final game of last year, and expected nothing less then. After a good start offensively for the Royals, in particular their running game, penalties on the first quarter took their toll, and they failed to score any points on their opening drive. They turned the ball over after quarter of an hour.

The defence came onto the field, and Gloucester's first play of the game scored a touchdown, a 40 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was no good, and the score was 6-0 to the gladiators. On the Royals second series, they fumbled the ball again, which resulted in a turnover deep in their own territory. The defence stood tall and pushed the gladiators back, and that was the end of the 1st quarter.

The second quarter saw Worcester's passing game improve, with 3 passes completed early on. Despite this, the offence was unable to score any points on this drive, missing a field goal. When Gloucester took control of the ball, they were pushed back to their own end zone by a determined Worcester defence. However, a length of the field pass by the gladiators to score a touchdown, and the extra point after took the score to 13-0 to the Gladiators.

The Royals got the ball back, and drove down the field, to get their first points of the season. Fran Rizzo scoring a field goal, and the score was 13-3. The Gloucester offence struggled to get anything going, and that was how the half ended.

The second half started poorly for Worcester, when the Gladiators intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. The extra point was good, and the score was 20-3. In answer to this, the Royals replied with an excellent field long drive to score their first touchdown on the season, a pass from Mike Burnage to Chris Mortimer. The extra point was no good, and the score went to 20-9.

The Gladiators replied with a touchdown of their own, a ten yard run, and then missed the extra point to make the score 26-9. The game ended this way, as neither offence could move the ball with any success in the 4th quarter.

Pre-season Scrimmage

Due to problems with neither the Worcester Royals or Coventry Jets having a home pitch ready in time for the first weekend of the season, the game has been postponed to later in the season and a scrimmage was held at Coventry instead.

We plan to make this an annual pre-season event, as it helped both teams highlight their strengths and weaknesses before their first competitve game of the year.
